The design was built of multiple curtains ranging in size, colour, and transparency. Movement was very important in showing the 26 locations, so the curtains would bunch and ripple into various shapes using hundreds of pullies. The play's climax involved kabuki dropping a curtain to reveal complete blackness behind, as the set was wheeled off in the previous scene.
